Some of the most frequently asked questions are answered below. They will provide you with useful information on our company and products, so that you know with whom and with what you are working. Since there is not sufficient room for all the answers, please do not hesitate to contact us directly.
1. What does ITH mean?
ITH stands for Industrie-Technische Konstruktionen Hohmann. This was the name given to the company by its founder Hans Hohmann during its start up in 1979 in Meschede, Germany. Hans Hohmann's original idea was as obvious as it was ingenious – the friction and torsion-free tensioning of bolts by means of hydraulic stretching of the bolt (ITH Stretch Method). The first product marketed by the new company was a bolt-tensioning cylinder, which worked using this principle. It was to be the foundation for a steady process of growth and innovation. With its close-tolerance (± 2,5 %) pre-tensioning force, the bolt-tensioning cylinder is still the most accurate tensioning tool on the market
2. What products does ITH supply?
As a system supplier for bolting technology, ITH produces a wide range of tools and other products such as connecting elements. Our program includes:
-
hydraulic bolt-tensioning cylinders up to thread size W 510 (510 mm) and above -
hydraulic torque wrenches up to 150,000 Nm and above
-
electric and pneumatic rotating power wrenches up to 13,000 Nm or 6,000 Nm
-
turn-angle controlled torque tools "ALPHA"
-
hydraulic nut splitters
-
special connecting elements from thread size M 20 (3/4")
-
patented ITH tension nuts
-
hydraulic pumps up to 4,000 bar
-

All products are designed to customer-specific requirements on request.
3. Where is ITH located?
ITH is represented all over the world. Refer to the section entitled Contacts. The company's headquarters and production facilities have been located in Meschede, Germany for over 25 years. To find out how to get there, click here.
4. When is the stretching process used?
Stretching processes are used from a clamp-length ratio of 1:3 and for pre-tensioning large bolts (e.g. M24 and greater). The clamp-length ratio is the ratio of the clamp length of the bolt to the diameter of the shaft. Stretching processes are indispensable when a high degree of accuracy has to be achieved. When several bolts have to be pre-tensioned simultaneously, the stretching method is also the best solution.
5. When is the turning process used?
The torque process is the most commonly used process and is virtually universal in application. However, the torque process works against the friction resistance on the bolt head and in the thread. This means that uncontrollable inaccuracies of up to 100 percent may arise.
6. What is the most accurate bolting method?
The most accurate method is the ITH Stretch Method because no friction is created during the bolting process. Bolts, which are tensioned using the turn-angle method, achieve higher accuracies than those tensioned by means of the torque process. When the turn-angle process is used, the initial tension is provided by torque. The torque part of the process involves friction and provides about 20% to 30% of the maximum value. This means that it is not possible to achieve the same accuracy as with the ITH Stretch Method.
7. What are ITH's corporate principles?
- Customer Focus:
For ITH, customer focus means that all the company's activities are one hundred percent geared to the customer's requirements. Through close collaboration, ITH concentrates its know-how in development, design, production, marketing and customer service on one single target: the technical and commercial benefit of the customer - Precision:
ITH tools operate with very close tolerances. Accurate pre-tensioning to the correct level is essential for highly stressed bolted joints, e.g. in the petrochemical and gas industries, wind-power generators and general mechanical engineering. - Profitability:
ITH's mission is to produce economically operating tools with a view to increasing the customer's productivity. - Experience:
ITH applies the technical experience gained in over 30 years of innovation in bolting technology. Over 100 national and international patents testify to this. - Service:
Our worldwide sales network guarantees fast service and expert advice by qualified engineers. We analyse the application and the technical requirements and provide the customer with the optimum solution from our various bolting techniques.
Do not hesitate to contact us. Personal contact with our customers is important to us!
